The school opened as Southwestern Junior College in 1961 with William Kepley as its president. The dean of admissions was Saxon Wright. The Chula Vista Star-News reported that 15 students had registered within the first half hour the dean of admission's office was open, with Oliver Pittenger, a graduate of the nearby Chula Vista High School being the first person to enroll.
Sweetwater High School (SUHI or SUH) is a high school in National City, California, United States. Established in 1920, it is one of the oldest high schools in San Diego County. These boys and girls carried the hopes and best wishes of many people as they attended classes in a three room division of St. Charles School across the street from what would be the future campus. In 2002, the Diocese of San Diego decided to upgrade all of its secondary campuses. A new site in Chula Vista was chosen and a new school was built.
Otay Ranch High School was built in 2003 as a part of the Sweetwater Union High School District and first opened to 9th and 10th graders and later accommodated 11th and 12th graders. Otay Ranch High School originally opened to relieve overcrowding from surrounding schools such as San Ysidro High School and Eastlake High School.
