[4] After funds were approved in 2020, major construction updates to the campus have been ongoing, led by the architecture firm Orcutt Winslow and the general contractor McCarthy Building Companies.

Students came together in June 2004 to convert the "S" to a "J" in memory of Josh Conard, a basketball player for Sunnyslope who was killed by a drunk driver. When the school was remodeled in the mid-1990s, the view of Sunnyslope Mountain from the home football stands was partially obstructed.

Paul Edward Johnson Jr. was born in Phoenix, Arizona on July 6, 1959. Johnson grew up in Sunnyslope, an urban poverty pocket area inside of Phoenix. Sunnyslope was established as Target Area F, an area designated as slum and blight for federal funds. Johnson graduated from attended Sunnyslope grade school, and Sunnyslope High School.
