Kirklees is a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England. The borough comprises the ten towns of Batley , Birstall , Cleckheaton , Dewsbury , Heckmondwike , Holmfirth , Huddersfield , Meltham , Mirfield and Slaithwaite .
Kirklees Council was established on 1 April 1974, when Kirklees and West Yorkshire were created under the Local Government Act 1972. The eleven former district councils within the area were abolished at the same time. [3] [4] Kirklees was awarded borough status, allowing the chair of the council to take the title of mayor. [5]

Many of the town and district's male residents had served in the regiment during its long history. This right was technically lost when merged with Dewsbury to form Kirklees MBC. On 25 March 1979, the latter gave the Freedom of Kirklees to the 3rd battalion of the Yorkshire Volunteers; this being the Duke of Wellington's Territorial Army unit.
