Classical music of the Soviet Union developed from the music of the Russian Empire. It gradually evolved from the experiments of the revolutionary era, such as orchestras with no conductors, towards classicism favored under Joseph Stalin's office. The music patriarchs of the era were Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Aram Khachaturian.

The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic was the last republic to adopt a state anthem, doing so in 1990. It had had none before this date, and used in its place the Soviet national anthem, which was "The Internationale" from 1917 to 1944 and the "National Anthem of the Soviet Union" from 1944 to 1990.

The album contained elements of rock and roll, blues and country music. At the time, popular music in the Soviet Union was split between official performers who were admitted to the musicians' union, and underground artists. Such underground artists were often highly trained musicians who also had other jobs.
