The Arkansas Southern Railroad (reporting mark ARS) is a short-line railroad which started service in October 2005. [1] ARS operates two disconnected lines consisting of Heavener, Oklahoma to Waldron, Arkansas (32 miles), and Ashdown to Nashville, Arkansas (29 miles), plus a switch track at Ashdown, [ 1 ] for a total of 63 miles. [ 2 ]
By 1966, all reference to the Louisiana & Arkansas had disappeared from the annual stockholder reports of Kansas City Southern. The Shreveporter, once the pride of the L&A, was discontinued on January 24, 1962, and the Southern Belle was discontinued on November 2, 1969, ending all passenger train service on the former Louisiana & Arkansas.

Other than an optimistic 1872 map suggesting the merger of the Arkansas Central, Helena & Corinth, and the Pine Bluff & Southwestern to form this, [4] [5] no evidence such a combined railway got off the ground. The Arkansas Central later became part of the Arkansas Midland Railroad. No info at all re: the existence of the others.
The prehistory of the W&BRV starts with the partnership of Gunn & Black, which owned a sawmill near Brinkley, Arkansas. [1] To haul logs to their mill, the partnership on July 1, 1879 began operating a 3-foot 6-inch gauge private rail line which originated from their mill and was extended in the direction of the town of Cotton Plant which was 11 miles to the northwest.

In early 1991, Georgia-Pacific formed the Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi Railroad subsidiary to purchase the rail line by the same name, whose owners had been planning to abandon it. [1] Georgia-Pacific soon began transferring southbound traffic to the AL&M's nearby tracks because the AD&N's track was steeper and more expensive to maintain.
