The Tokyo Hotel, located at 19 E. Ohio Street, was a hotel in the Near North Side of Chicago. Designed by architect Ralph C. Harris , it is 15 stories tall, and has 150 rooms. It opened in 1927 as the Devonshire Hotel.
Sixteen was designed by Joe Valerio, whose previous credits included the Garmin flagship store on the Magnificent Mile. [4] Valerio's design had to work within spatial constraints determined by the tower's architects, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, leaving him to deal with complications stemming from a variety of column shapes — some square, some round, and others rectangular.
The hotel is one of two four star hotels. In 2010, Chicago had two five-star hotels and two five-star restaurants. [40] By the time of the Forbes Travel Guide: 2013 City Guide, the hotel and restaurant were each among only three five-star ratings in the city. [41]
In 2012 the hotel started a $150 million renovation, including new dining outlets 720 South Bar & Grill, SNAX and Kitty O'Sheas. The Hilton Chicago was inducted into Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in 2015. [15] In March 2020, the hotel closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The restaurant is inspired from the Edo period and includes a traditional Japanese garden with Japanese maple trees (Momiji), a waterfall and a carp pond. [2] Tofuya Ukai occupies the premises of a 200-year-old former sake brewery transplanted from Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, and still keeps the sake brewing vats. [3]
The West tower includes the Regency Club on the 35th floor. Other amenities include a fitness center, a game area, two full-service restaurants, and a bar. Rooms facing north have an unobstructed view of the Chicago River. Rooms facing east may be able to see Lake Michigan, but the view is obstructed by both Columbus Plaza and Three Illinois Center
Though it is taller than the Eiffel Tower, Tokyo Tower weighs about 4,000 tons, 3,300 less than the Eiffel Tower [12] as it is significantly thinner and simpler in construction. It was opened to the public on 23 December 1958 at a final cost of ¥2.8 billion ($8.4 million in 1958). [10] [13] Tokyo Tower was mortgaged for ¥10 billion in 2000. [14]
In 2018 the hotel was awarded the #2 best hotel in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report and in 2017 the Travel + Leisure magazine's award for #1 Hotel in Chicago. [18] The Peninsula is one of only four 5-star hotels in Chicago, the others being the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago, The Langham Chicago, and Trump Tower Chicago. [19]
