In their first invasion, the Wandenreich kill many Soul Reapers including the Head-Captain, Yamamoto. Uryū joins Yhwach and learns the truth behind the death of his mother. Later, Ichigo and his friends aid the Soul Society in fighting the Wandenreich's second invasion, but Yhwach invades the Royal Palace and kills the Soul King.
Ichigo rises to attack, with support from Orihime and Yoruichi, though Yhwach dispels any danger to him, Ichigo reaches the Soul King and pulls the blade out of him, falling for Yhwach's ploy. Forced by the Quincy blood in him, Ichigo inadvertently kills the Soul King.
Though he mortally wounded the Soul King, Yhwach uses his influence over Ichigo's Quincy powers to have him kill the Soul King. But when Mimihagi intervened through Ukitake's sacrifice, Uryū holding off Ichigo, Yhwach decides to absorb Mimihagi while ordering his forces to kill anyone who intends to stop him from fully absorbing the Soul King.
