In 1954, the Donegal High School was formed by the combination of the East Donegal Township, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Mount Joy Township high schools. The building was built in 1954 at the intersections of PA-772 and Union School Road. This structure remained as the high school until 2012, when a new building was built on nearby Koser Road.
When the school first opened, it served grades K-8. In 1974, Junior High students were sent to the High School Complex. Classrooms were added later on. It was at this point a decision as taken to relocate the school to a new 14-acre (57,000 m 2) site on the southern edge of the town, on the Ballyshannon Road, overlooking Donegal Bay and Donegal Abbey. The new building was opened in 1982, with the school renamed as the Abbey Vocational School to reflect its new location.
