The Coast Community College District was created in 1947 following a special election to establish the district and Orange Coast College. [1] The district became a multi-campus operation following the construction of Golden West College in 1966, following being renamed from the Orange Coast Junior College District.

[3] From 1972 to 1979, Garman led the Golden West Rustlers to a record of 211 wins and 40 losses, [ 2 ] [ 4 ] and won four consecutive national junior college championships from 1975 to 1978.
