Epsom Downs is an area of chalk upland near Epsom, Surrey; [1] in the North Downs. Part of the area is taken up by the racecourse , the gallops are part of the land purchased by Stanly Wootton in 1925 and are open to users such as ramblers , model aircraft flyers, golfers and cyclists .

[8] [88] The 1946 City and Suburban was held on 5 August at Epsom Downs to allow the racecourse to be refurbished. The 1991 race was run at Kempton.
The in-field at Epsom, however, was open to the public, making it difficult to maintain in racing condition. In 1985 legislation was passed allowing the racecourse to fence off part of Epsom Downs and charge for public admission to the in-field. Consequently the race was reduced to a mile and a half and run over the main Derby course. [4]
The event is named after Diomed, the inaugural winner of Epsom's most famous race, the Epsom Derby. It was established in 1971, although it could be regarded as a continuation of a previous event, the St James Stakes. The Diomed Stakes is now held on the second day of Epsom's two-day Derby Festival meeting, the same day as the Epsom Derby.
The 2021 Epsom Derby was the 242nd annual running of the Derby horse race and took place at Epsom Downs Racecourse on 5 June 2021. The race was sponsored for the first time by the online car-dealer Cazoo. [1] The winner was Godolphin's bay colt Adayar, ridden by Adam Kirby and trained at Newmarket by Charlie Appleby.
Epsom Down in the southern town outlands of Epsom was used as a venue for two first-class cricket matches between 1816 and 1819. Both were between the local Epsom Cricket Club and the Hampshire county team. [1] The approximate site is Epsom Downs Racecourse.
