The largest county is Baldwin (1,590 sq mi, 4,118 km 2) and the smallest is Etowah (535 sq mi, 1,386 km 2). [8] The Constitution of Alabama requires that any new county in Alabama cover at least 600 square miles (1,600 km 2) in area, effectively limiting the creation of new counties in the state. [9]
It was previously served by Livingston High School until it merged into Sumter Central High in 2011. [16] In addition there is a charter school on the campus of the University of West Alabama in Livingston, University Charter School. [17] Sumter Academy, a private school, was in an unincorporated area near York. [18] It closed in 2017. [19]
Sumterville was originally known as Pattons Hill in honor of James W. Patton, who owned the surrounding land. The name was then changed to Sumterville in 1834. [2] At one point, Sumterville was home to an inn, a boys and girls academy, several churches, a dentist, and a drugstore. [3]
