In 1954, the US Military Assistance Advisory Group, Taiwan (MAAG, Taiwan) was stationed at the base. USAF use of the base began in 1958 with the deployment of twelve Lockheed F-104 Starfighters from the 83d Fighter-Interceptor Squadron during the Quemoy crisis.
