The Travelin' McCourys is a bluegrass band from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 2009.The band is composed of brothers Ronnie McCoury, Rob McCoury, Alan Bartram, Jason Carter, and Cody Kilby, and was formed out of the Del McCoury Band, in which the McCourys, Bartram, and Carter still play.
The lyrics were written the following day by Boon who in 1962 at age 11 had moved to Los Angeles, California, and had lived in California until 1967, [2] [3] and had also sojourned in California prior to joining Diesel in 1978. [4] [5] Boon would later recall that he had spent time in Sausalito the summer before writing the song. [6]
Originally the band was called Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals with Del on guitar and his brother Jerry on bass. The band went through a number of changes in personnel until the 1980s when the band solidified its line-up, adding McCoury's sons, Ronnie and Robbie on mandolin and banjo, respectively. [1]

Ronnie McCoury was born in York County, Pennsylvania [5] on March 16, 1967. He was exposed to bluegrass from a young age, as his father had his own band, Del McCoury &The Dixie Pals. Ronnie lists his musical influences as Bill Monroe , David Grisman , Sam Bush , Jerry Douglas , Alan O'Bryant, and The Osborne Brothers .
