The era from 1902 to 1920 was the most complex era for enlisted rank insignia in the United States Army. During that time the army was organized with each branch (cavalry, infantry, artillery, etc.) having its own rank structure. This led to a large number of insignia designs being used.
The biggest change in the history of US Army enlisted ranks came on June 4, 1920. On that day congress passed a law [ 32 ] that changed how enlisted ranks were managed. It created seven pay grades, numbered one to seven with one being the highest, and gave the president the authority to create whatever ranks were necessary within those grades.
On June 12, 1851, the United States Army issued new uniform regulations. [1] The new regulations set out a system of chevrons to show enlisted rank. Chevrons had been used to show rank in the 1820s and sergeants and corporals of dragoons had worn them to show rank since 1833.
