The painting was made by van Gogh during his stay in Auvers-sur-Oise, with Doctor Gachet. It is a copy, like van Gogh made many, of a study by Jacob Jordaens exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille. The painting was not copied directly, but from an etching by Doctor Gachet from 1873, signed with his artist name, Paul van Ryssel.
Gachet befriended Van Gogh and was the subject of two portraits, one of which, Portrait of Dr. Gachet, was sold at auction for over $80m (£48m) in 1990. [6] Van Gogh died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The room on the upper floor of the Auberge Ravoux where he died has been preserved, although no furniture remains.
Vincent van Gogh on his Deathbed, by Paul Gachet, his doctor (1890) In addition to the account given by Adeline Ravoux, Émile Bernard's letter to Albert Aurier provides details of the funeral which was held in the afternoon of 30 July 1890.
