Café Brauer was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, [1] and it received Chicago Landmark status on February 5, 2003. [8] The building is located on the site of the South Pond Refectory, a wood-frame boathouse and restaurant designed by William Le Baron Jenney which was open from 1882 until 1908. [2]
It began business in 1847 as the Alton & Sangamon Railroad, beginning construction in 1850 and reaching Springfield in 1853. In 1852 the railroad became the Chicago and Mississippi. In 1855 they located their main repair shops on Bloomington's west side, building locomotives, freight and passenger cars.
The Skokie Valley Trail southern terminus is in this area. The NRHP historic district includes 468 contributing structures and 141 non-contributing ones. [2] The Old Treaty Elm, said to be the site where the Indian Treaty of 1835 was signed, stood near the southernmost point of the District until 1933. A commemorative plaque now marks the site.
While the district's residents were mainly Western European, particularly German and Irish, in its first decades, the area became predominantly Italian around 1900 and remained so until it entered a decline in the 1940s and 1950s. [2] The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 3, 1983. [1]
The name "Chicago" is generally believed to derive from a French rendering of the Miami–Illinois language word šikaakwa, referring to the plant Allium tricoccum, as well as the animal skunk. [3] The first known reference to the site of the current city of Chicago as "Checagou" was by Robert de LaSalle around 1679 in a memoir. [4]
