While he was in Missouri, Bunker heard about the call for volunteers to form the Mormon Battalion. He returned to Garden Grove and was one of the first to volunteer. The Battalion marched to Santa Fe, Tucson, San Diego, and finally to Los Angeles, where Bunker finished the six months he had left in his tour of duty. He was discharged in July 1847.
