No worries, I contacted 8Bitdo support and they clarified everything. The micro controller does not work with iPad or iPhone for gaming. Luckily, the whole reason I bought it was to play emulators which had keyboard buttons to control the game. I just needed to press every key to find out what they did and map it using the 8Bitdo Ultimate Software.

I have the 8bitdo adapter. My GF dad gifted us his xbox one X when he got the newer version. My scenario is identical to yours. I game on my PC and don't care about the xbox enough to buy a dedicated controller for it. But I also hate changing the fucking batteries on those xbox controller and would simply prefer the 8bitdo controller for gaming.
do 8bitdo controllers work on linux. Yes. Their site boasts Raspberry Pi compatibility, which is, for the most part, synonymous with GNU/Linux compatibility. I have two and they work great. FYI I have a sneaking suspicion that the $15 switch pro knock-off controllers from 5 Below are using 8bitdo firmware internally.
