Gladwin had its beginnings in 1875 during the Michigan lumber boom. Situated on the Cedar River, the city was named Cedar until it was discovered that another Michigan town shared the same name. Thereafter, the city was named after the county. [8] The first church in Gladwin was a Methodist church completed on March 31, 1878.

The city of Gladwin is at the northwest corner and incorporates land that was formerly part of the township. The eastern boundary of the township is the meridian used in the survey of Michigan land. The Cedar River flows through the western portion of the township, and the Tittabawassee River flows through the northeast corner.
As of the census [1] of 2000, there were 1,869 people, 654 households, and 516 families residing in the township. The population density was 53.9 inhabitants per square mile (20.8/km 2).
