Wise was born into a fundamentalist Baptist family in Illinois. [2] He attended the University of Chicago and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in geology.He then was educated at Harvard University, where he received a Master of Arts (M.A.) in geology and a Ph.D. in paleontology under the supervision of Stephen Jay Gould, a prominent opponent of creationism, in 1989.
