Windthorst is located in northern Texas, primarily in eastern Archer County but extending eastward into Clay County. U.S. Route 281 passes through the center of the town, leading north 25 miles (40 km) to Wichita Falls and southeast 33 miles (53 km) to Jacksboro .
The Battle of Stone Houses was a skirmish between Texas Rangers and a band of Kichai Indians which took place on November 10, 1837. The skirmish, which took place ten miles south of what is now Windthorst, Texas, was named for three stone mounds near the battlefield which appeared to the Indians to be small houses.

SH 25 was one of the original 25 Texas highway routes proposed on June 21, 1917. [2] The original route was to be from Henrietta to Meridian. On August 21, 1923, all of SH 25 south of Mineral Wells was cancelled. On February 18, 1924, the section from Jacksboro to Henrietta was cancelled, and SH 25 had been rerouted to Archer City. [3]
