Vintage Sons of Norway lapel pins worn by members. The Sons of Norway was founded as the Independent Order of the Sons of Norway. [2] The organization was founded by 18 members on January 16, 1895, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to insure each other when they were unable to secure life insurance on their own.
Garratt returned to Regina in 1995 – marrying Karla Elder in 2000. His wife became pregnant with the couple's first child, Jackson, in 2001 and they relocated to Spruce Grove, Alberta, 11 kilometres to the east of Edmonton – Alberta’s capital city. The Canadian Birkebeiner is named after the Norwegian Birkebeinerrennet, which commemorates an important historical event. [2] In 1206 a group of Birkebeiner loyalists, who fought for Sverre Sigurdsson and his descendants in the Norwegian civil war, smuggled Haakon IV, the widely regarded illegitimate son of Norway's King Håkon Sverresson, from Lillehammer to safety in Trondheim.
New Norway is a hamlet located in central Alberta, Canada within Camrose County. [2] Named in 1895, it is located on Highway 21 , approximately 100 km (62 mi) southeast of Edmonton and 22 km (14 mi) southwest of Camrose .
