Elkhart (/ ˈ ɛ l k ɑːr t / EL-kart) is a city in Elkhart County, Indiana, United States.The population was 53,923 at the 2020 census. The city is located 15 miles (24 km) east of South Bend, Indiana.

Elkhart was founded in 1853 [4] by settlers from Elkhart, Indiana. After a decline in the population of the original town, the Elkhart Post Office was moved to the nearby town of Ottawa. In a few years, the name would be moved once again to its current location. [5] It was incorporated as a city on July 27, 1904. [6]

The name of the post office was changed from Elkhart City to Elkhart in 1883. [14] A new rail depot was built at Elkhart in 1888. Like many frontier towns, Elkhart had its share of fires. The nearby residence of the rancher John D. Gillett was destroyed by fire on February 14, 1871, although he rebuilt on the same site.
