The parish flanks the north side of the Sound and extends to within 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of Kirkwall, and contains the village of St Mary's Holm, as well as the island of Lamb Holm. The Mainland section is 6 miles (9.7 km) by 2 miles (3.2 km). [2] The shores are mostly rocky, and the interior consists of light thin, loamy land. [2]
Kirkwall is a port with ferry services to Aberdeen and Lerwick, as well as the principal north islands in the group. Hatson pier, the main ferry terminal, is some 2 mi (3 km) outside the town centre. [38] The Aberdeen, Leith, Clyde & Tay Shipping Company operated steamer services to Kirkwall from 1836, with successor companies operating until 2002.
The Mitchell Map. The Mitchell Map is a map made by John Mitchell (1711–1768), which was reprinted several times during the second half of the 18th century. The map, formally titled A map of the British and French dominions in North America &c., was used as a primary map source during the Treaty of Paris for defining the boundaries of the newly independent United States.
Saint Andrews is on the east side of Mainland, [2] and extends from the eastern boundary of Kirkwall parish to the sea, and includes the island of Kirkholm. [ 2 ] The land is mostly flat, but has diversities of surface, and rises nowhere higher than 350 ft. [ 2 ] The coast includes both sandy beach and precipitous rock, and has a large sea cavern.
Generally, areas in Virginia located west of, or (in many cases) within, the piedmont region are considered part of western Virginia. The United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia covers most of the state's land area, and includes most cities and counties in central and southern Virginia .
