This season was considered the worst since the 2012 season when Auburn went 3-9 and 0–8 in SEC play. In the 2016 season, Auburn had the fourth-toughest schedule in the country. Despite the schedule and various team injuries, Malzahn managed to lead the Tigers to a New Year's Six Sugar Bowl appearance against Oklahoma.
