"Heavy Action" is a musical piece composed by Johnny Pearson for KPM Music.Composed in 1970, and featuring a strong brass and string fanfare opening, "Heavy Action" soon became a well established sporting theme tune, most associated in the United Kingdom as the theme for Superstars [1] and in the United States as the theme music for ABC and ESPN's Monday Night Football. [2]
The 1985 season saw a new theme utilized throughout both the pregame show and game-opening sequence. This theme would be utilized for the remainder of the decade. Another music selection was used for the "Great Moments" segment, a segment of clips from older games on NBC that was unique in that instead of the NFL Films footage, NBC used their own footage and audio.
The new music lasted until CBS lost the NFL rights at the end of the 1993 season, but continued to be used by CBS Radio until 2002. Several remixed versions of the 1993 theme were used upon the return of the NFL to CBS until the end of the 2002 season, when CBS replaced its entire NFL music package with one composed by E.S. Posthumus.
At the start of the 2003 NFL season, CBS Sports introduced Posthumus Zone as the new theme music for The NFL Today and for the network's NFL game telecasts. The song was composed by Los Angeles electronica group E.S. Posthumus, so named because it composes songs that have no-longer-existing ancient cities as a motif.

"Posthumus Zone", which is just under a minute long, was released by E.S. Posthumus in January 2008 as a single on the iTunes Store and on Amazon MP3. In 2005 , E.S. Posthumus also released the single "Rise to Glory," a remix of "Posthumus Zone" in association with DJ Quik with vocals from Bizarre .
