Farwell was platted in 1887. [6] A post office was established at Farwell in 1887, and remained in operation until 1998. Farwell Independent School District is a public school district based in Farwell, Texas (USA). Located in Parmer County, [1] a small portion of the district extends into Bailey County. Farwell was born in Painted Post, New York on July 1, 1823. He was a son of Henry Farwell (1795–1873) and Nancy (née Jackson) Farwell (1798–1887). Farwell was the son of James and Rebecca (Cady) Farwell; both of his parents died in his childhood, leaving him orphaned at age 11. He married Frances A. Cross (spelled "Corss" in many historical documents) on September 20, 1853, while he was serving his term as governor. She was the daughter of General Andrew N. Cross (or "Corss"), of Madison.
