Newport is a 600-acre (2.4 km 2) master-planned, mixed-use community in Downtown Jersey City, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, consisting of retail, residential, office, and entertainment facilities. The neighborhood is situated on the Hudson Waterfront. Prior to development, the area was home to the Erie Railroad's Pavonia Terminal.
The mall is one of the few enclosed, regional shopping facilities in Hudson County. The building was developed by Melvin Simon & Associates in 1990. The Newport Tower is next to the Hudson River and is almost exactly across the river from the World Financial Center in Manhattan. The Newport Tower is a modern-style building.

Journal Square is one of three major terminals for New Jersey Transit buses to and from Jersey City, the others being Exchange Place and Hoboken Terminal.
