The Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library is the public library serving Sanford, Maine. [2] It is located at 952 Main Street, in an architecturally distinguished Colonial Revival brick building built in 1937, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
The house was built in 1871 by Thomas Goodall, an Englishman who made his fortune in American textile business, and was then owner of the Goodall Mill in Sanford. At the time of this house's construction, the mill was a relatively small operation, but by the turn of the 20th century it was the area's largest employer, with a payroll of about 1,000.
In 1914, the Goodall family built Goodall Park, a 784-seat roofed stadium, now a treasured historic site. They also helped build the library, town hall, hospital, airport, and golf club. A bronze statue was erected by the citizens of Sanford in 1917 to the memory of Thomas Goodall. His effigy has a place of honor in Central Park. [9]
