Look for a Buick with the 3.8L V-6. They stopped making the 3.8L V-6 in 2008 so you're for an early 2000 model. Any year Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, or Lincoln Town Car with the 4.6L V-8 is a good choice. You get any one of those vehicles in excellent shape with about 100,00 miles for around $5,000.
Look for cars that are reliable and more importantly, safe. You can certainly find a car for $4-5k but just understand that at that price it is going to have issues. There are differences between superficial problems and mechanical issues. Body paint faded - probably not a big deal.
Parts are cheap and plentiful and repairs are easy. Not realistic, but I'd try to find a Corolla or Civic and get a ppi before you buy it. If you want something cheap, you could look for a Pontiac Vibe. Its a rebadge of the Toyota Matrix, and it's really reliable. But since people think that it's just a crappy pontiac, some sellers sell the car ...
Hyundai i30-40. Honda Civic is the best combination of reliable/economical/powerful you'll manage at under £5k, the 1.8 petrol and 2.2 diesel are both great cars, simple enough that not much can go wrong and will outrun everything else in their class. Something Japanese and Petrol.
Nissan. Fiat Chrylser Dodge Jeep RAM (FCA) N/A Subaru's with an EJ engine (~2011 and older), as they run timing belts and have head-gasket flaws. Suzuki, due to poor parts and support USDM. Anything Mitsubishi sans the 4G engined stuff. Watch out for timing belts. Avoid 1998-2003 1ZZ Corollas for Oil Consumption.
Best Used Cars under $5,000 First time poster, I’m an international student from Australia in the US for college in Missouri and I’m looking for a car in the $3,000 range. I’m just looking for suggestions for reliable and fuel efficient and cars to avoid while I’m at college.
Even with 100,000 miles, it will run well, be cheap to fix and should have little to no problems. There are a couple ways to go about this. Basically, any car you buy in the $5k and under range is likely to need some basics: CV boots, plugs and wires, oil and coolant, brake pads and rotors, maybe more.
Just about any AWD car under $5k is going to be on its very last legs. All cars at that price point are high mileage, old, and/or in very bad condition. Add in a desirable feature like AWD and they are higher mileage, older and/or in even worse condition. I'd say look for Subarus, Legacies or Imprezas or Outbacks, but any you'll find at this ...
I am currently browsing around for my first car, and it has been so hard in finding the one that I like best. Right now, I currently have my eyes on 2004-05 Honda Civic models, as well as 2004-08 Toyota Corolla and Matrix.
4Runner1996. •. Buy the cleanest long-term-owner '92-'01 Camry you can find in the $2500-3k range, set the rest of the budget aside to catch it up on any outstanding maintenance/repairs (timing belt, accessory belts/hoses, addressing oil leaks, brakes/tires,etc). Right now you need reliable transportation and not a whole lot else.
