Opeth was formed in 1990 by vocalist David Isberg. He later recruited bassist Mikael Åkerfeldt without the consent of the other band members he previously hired, which resulted in the departure of all members except Isberg and Åkerfeldt. Isberg soon left, but Åkerfeldt decided to remain in the band and keep it in activity.
Isberg formed Opeth with some friends from Täby in the Spring of 1990. [3] Long-time friend Mikael Åkerfeldt was in a band called Eruption, but was considering a departure from this group. Isberg invited him to play bass for Opeth and Åkerfeldt accepted the offer.

A native of Stockholm, Mikael Åkerfeldt was the vocalist for Eruption, a death metal band he formed in 1987 at the age of 13. [5] After Eruption disbanded in 1989, he joined Opeth, initially as a keyboardist. When their original bassist left Opeth two years later, Åkerfeldt replaced him on bass, and Isberg then assumed guitar duties.
