A red eye is an eye that appears red due to illness or injury. It is usually injection and prominence of the superficial blood vessels of the conjunctiva, which may be caused by disorders of these or adjacent structures. Conjunctivitis and subconjunctival hemorrhage are two of the less serious but more common causes.
It typically serves to provide lubrication for the eye through the production of mucus and tears. When infected with AHC, patients will experience painful, red eyes, swelling of the conjunctival tissue, and frequent mucus discharge from the eyes accompanied by excessive tearing and subconjunctival hemorrhaging.
Treatment is generally symptomatic and supportive. [9] Medicines to ease pain and reduce fever can be bought over the counter. [9] For adenoviral conjunctivitis, a cold compress and lubricants may provide some relief of discomfort. [16] Steroid eye drops may be required if the cornea is involved. [16]
Major symptoms are sudden loss of vision (partial or complete), sudden blurred or "foggy" vision, and; pain on movement of the affected eye. [4] [5] [2]Many patients with optic neuritis may lose some of their color vision in the affected eye (especially red), with colors appearing subtly washed out compared to the other eye.
Adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis, also known as epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, is a contagious eye infection, a type of adenovirus disease caused by adenoviruses. [1] It typically presents as a conjunctivitis with a sudden onset of a painful red eye, watery discharge and feeling that something is in the eye. [3]
Rhinorrhea usually resolves without intervention, but may require treatment by a doctor if symptoms last more than 10 days or if symptoms are the result of foreign bodies in the nose. [4] The term rhinorrhea was coined in 1866 from the Greek rhino-("of the nose") and -rhoia ("discharge" or "flow"). [5]
Cluster headache is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent severe headaches on one side of the head, typically around the eye(s). [1] There is often accompanying eye watering, nasal congestion, or swelling around the eye on the affected side. [1]
Needle-in-the-eye syndrome, sharp short-lived head pain, [1] jabs and jolts syndrome [2] Ophthalmodynia periodica , also known as " ice-pick headache ", is a primary headache disorder , so it is not caused by any other conditions.
