The origins of speedway in Plymouth began when Western Speedways Ltd promoted the dirt track racing at Pennycross Stadium. The opening meeting was a challenge match against Exeter on 13 June 1931. [3] The general manager of the stadium Freddie Hore signed Australian Bert Spencer as the first star to ride at Plymouth. [4]
The Speedway Great Britain (SGB) Championship is the second division of speedway league competition in the United Kingdom, governed by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). It was introduced for 2017 following a restructuring of British speedway.

The National Development League formerly called the National League was formed in 2009 as the third division of speedway in the United Kingdom, replacing the Conference League. [1] It follows the same rules and regulations as the SGB Premiership and SGB Championship , including the use of rider averages.

The 2009 National League speedway season was the third tier/division of British speedway and was contested by ten teams. Bournemouth Buccaneers were champions. [ 1 ] It was the first season under the new name after previously been known as the Conference League.
