Honeoye (/ ˈ h ʌ n i ɔɪ / HUN-ee-oy) [5] is a hamlet in the Town of Richmond, in Ontario County, New York, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census , which lists the community as a census-designated place (CDP).
Richmond was part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The area was first settled around 1790. The town was established in 1796 as "Pittstown", after Captain Peter Pitts, and was renamed "Honeoye" in 1808. In 1815, the name was changed to "Richmond", after Peter Pitts' wife, Abigail Richmond Pitts, regarded as the town's "founding mother."
A major feeder stream, called Honeoye Inlet, enters the lake at the south end. [2] The hamlet of Honeoye in the Town of Richmond is located at its northern end. The Honeoye Lake Park Association administers a large tract of summer cottages and year-round dwellings known as the Times-Union Tract just south of the hamlet on the east side of the lake.
The eastern town line is partly defined by Honeoye Lake, the western town line by Hemlock Lake, and Canadice Lake is entirely within the town, both minor Finger Lakes. The southern and western town lines form part of the border of Livingston County. New York State Route 15A is a north–south highway in the town.
