The Wapello Community School District, or Wapello Community Schools, is a rural public school district headquartered in Wapello, Iowa.It is mostly within Louisa County, with a smaller area in Des Moines County, and serves the towns of Wapello and Oakville, and the surrounding rural areas.
It was formed on July 1, 2012, by the merger of the Fremont Community School District and the Eddyville–Blakesburg Community School District. [5] On September 13, 2011, the merger was approved in a referendum, with the Eddyville–Blakesburg district voters doing so on a 335–86 basis and the Fremont voters doing so on a 91–60 basis. [6]

In fall 1995 the number of school districts operating high schools was down to 353, and in 1995 670 was the median enrollment K-12 of an Iowa school district. [7] An Iowa Department of Education consultant named Guy Ghan referred to the 1990s school district mergers as the "third wave".
