Adonidia merrillii, the Manila palm, is a palm tree species native to the Philippines (Palawan and Danjugan Island). [1] This palm was cultivated for centuries in East Asia before becoming a staple in the West. It is reportedly naturalized in the West Indies and Florida. [3]
Raphia farinifera is a tropical African palm tree occurring in lowland riparian and swamp forest, also around human habitations and cultivated locations, on stream banks and other moist situations at altitudes of 50–1000 m. [1]
The needle palm assumes a shrublike clumping form with several stems growing from a single base, the stems growing very slowly and tightly together, eventually forming a dense base 1–1.2 m (3.3–3.9 ft) tall, with numerous sharp needle-like spines produced between the leaves; these are 10–25 cm (3.9–9.8 in) long and protect the stem growing point from browsing animals.
It is a very fast growing palm, and can go from 3 to 15 feet (0.9 to 4.6 m) in just 5 years under the right conditions. During late spring the tree will produce small, fragrant flowers. Once fully matured, it can reach heights of up to 70 feet (21 m) in the wild; however, most do not exceed 40 feet (12 m).
This is a list of all the genera in the botanical family Arecaceae, the palm family, arranged by tribes and subtribes within the family. [1] Genera Palmarum (2008) lists 183 genera. [2] Lanonia, Saribus, and the monotypic genera Jailoloa, Wallaceodoxa, Manjekia, [3] and Sabinaria, which were described after 2008, have also been included below.
As Hurricane Ian battered Florida, the state's palm trees stood firm, thanks to their flexible trunks and above-ground roots. Palm trees bend in high winds and are hard to uproot.
Sabal palmetto grows up to 20 m (80 ft) tall. [8] Starting at half to two-thirds the height, the tree develops into a rounded, costapalmate fan of numerous leaflets.A costapalmate leaf has a definite costa (midrib), unlike the typical palmate or fan leaf, but the leaflets are arranged radially like in a palmate leaf.
