Allen was born in Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent, [3] and after playing football for his schools and the Boys' Brigade, he was signed by Stoke City as an amateur, before turning professional on his seventeenth birthday in November 1956. In the 1960s he began to teach at Stoke-on-Trent College of Art, which later merged with the North Staffordshire Polytechnic, where he was the head of the Faculty of Art and Design. He was a member of the committee for art and design at the Council for National Academic Awards. He retired from the polytechnic in 1980.
