Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (Sinhala: පින්නවල අලි අනාථාගාරය), is a captive breeding and conservation institute for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world.

The commencement of Pinnawala Open Zoo first came through the period of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga in 2000. But the constructions were stopped in 2002 due to some disputes among the government, where the construction officially started in 2008 within former President Mahinda Rajapakse 's period. [ 3 ]

The spelling I found varies from Pinnewala to Pinnawala to Pinnawela, but mostly it seems to be Pinnawala, and a photo of the entrance sign I found here says Pinnawala.
