Caterpillars grow up to 9 centimetres (3.5 in) and are green in the first instar, but may be one of a variety of colors in later instars, including green or brownish-red. [ 7 ] [ 8 ] The head and first two thoracic segments can be retracted into the third segment. [ 8 ]

Callophrys rubi has a wingspan reaching about 26–30 millimetres (1.0–1.2 in) in length. [3] The oversides of the wings are a uniform dull brown, with two paler patches on the male's forewings made up of scent scales. [1] The undersides are a bright green with a thin white line, often reduced to a faint row of dots or even missing altogether.
