Banner Marsh State Fish and Wildlife Area is an important stopover site for many migratory birds. The Audubon Society has chosen it as an Important Bird Area. [10] Peoria Audubon Society has spotted over 200 species of birds. [4] It also supports breeding populations for wetland and grassland birds.

[1] The preserve includes Prairie, Savanna, Woodland, as well as an ADA Path, Birding Area, and Nature Trail. [2] With 349 recorded species, it is Illinois's hottest spot on EBird. [3]
The refuge provides significant resting areas for migratory birds utilizing the Mississippi Flyway. Wintering numbers of Canada geese can peak at 200,000. A total of nearly 1000 vascular plant species, 245 bird species, 33 mammal species, 63 fish species, and 44 reptile and amphibian species have been documented on the refuge.
Even though many birds can change their stopover sites, birds such as swans and waders depend on wetland stopover sites to 'refuel' on migration. The destruction of these sites could therefore be detrimental to bird populations. [8] Increased predation at stopover sites could lead to drastic declines in migratory bird populations. [9]
The measure would allow 14- and 15-year-olds to work summer jobs, like lifeguarding and officiating sports, for Illinois park districts and recreational departments, as long as an adult is on-site.
