Maine Medical Center is a teaching hospital, with an affiliation with the University of Southern Maine, Saint Joseph's College, Tufts University and Dartmouth College. As a part of its mission, MMC is also a leader in biomedical research, through its Maine Medical Center Research Institute, ongoing clinical trials, and translational research.
It serves most of Androscoggin County, including Lewiston and Auburn, Maine and various small and medium-sized communities. It is designated as a trauma center. The hospital was established in the 1860s and officially incorporated in 1888 by Dr. Edward H. Hill, an alumnus of nearby Bates College and also Harvard Medical School.
Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is also a major training affiliate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. According to Leapfrog Group, NLEMMC is one of 16 hospitals that were "A"-rated for safety in Maine; 80% of the state's hospitals received "A"-grades, surpassed only by Massachusetts with 83%. [4]
