If so, lining the box with polyethylene (or similar) should prevent the creosote from coming into contact with the soil and plants.

There might be a fuel delivery problem (clogged filter, etc.), such that the governor is acting properly to give more fuel, but unsuccessfully. If this generator then slows down (as under high loading), it will draw reverse power and trip out.
With that in mind I will offer the following. 1. There is no such thing as a piping fitting called "expander". You cannot order a fitting called an expander (or increaser) from a pipe fitting vendor. There is a fitting that is used when the line size changes and that fitting is called a "reducer".
