Fungus gnats are small, dark, short-lived gnats, of the families Sciaridae, Diadocidiidae, Ditomyiidae, Keroplatidae, Bolitophilidae, and Mycetophilidae (order Diptera); they comprise six of the seven families placed in the superfamily Sciaroidea.
The fungus gnats lay their eggs in moist organic debris or soil, which hatch into larvae. The larvae feed on organic matter such as leaf mold, mulch, compost, grass clippings, root hairs and fungi. They eventually become pupae and then adults emerge from the pupae.
Fungus gnats are one of the most common problems for indoor gardeners—and one of the toughest to solve. When these tiny flying insects strike, you want them gone fast—but it took me several failed attempts before I solved the problem for good.
The Sciaridae are a family of flies, commonly known as dark-winged fungus gnats. Commonly found in moist environments, they are known to be a pest of mushroom farms and are commonly found in household plant pots.
Fungus gnats are a persistent pest that can damage greenhouse and indoor potted plants, especially young ones that don’t have many roots. They can be mistaken for other household pests like mosquitos, but don’t cause physical harm to humans.
The main difference between thrips and fungus gnats is the areas they infect. Thrips typically only infect outside plants, while fungus gnats are a houseplant issue. Fungus gnats are harmless and can be controlled with sticky and vinegar traps.
The adults fungus gnats are active insects but weak fliers, instead making short, erratic skipping flights. Within homes they are most often seen in the near vicinity of the soil surface of houseplants, but may disperse short distances and often accumulate around nearby windows.
Fungus gnats are tiny, black flies that are commonly seen around lamps and windows. They are annoying, but harmless and do not harm indoor plants. The larvae breed in moist soil, primarily in potted plants containing soil rich in organic matter. Larvae feed on fungi in the moist soil. Overwatering plants contributes to the growth of the fungi ...
Fungus gnats are tiny flying bugs belonging to a few insect families (namely Sciaridae, aka dark-winged fungus gnats). They eat plant matter, mulch, compost, and—true to their...
Fungus gnats are an annoying pest that thrive in damp conditions. If your potted plants or garden beds are infested with small black flies, you may be facing this problem. Keeping soil dry is the number one way to get rid of fungus gnats.
Mycetophilidae is a family of small flies, forming the bulk of those species known as fungus gnats. About 3000 described species are placed in 150 genera, but the true number of species is undoubtedly much higher. They are generally found in the damp habitats favoured by their host fungi and sometimes form dense swarms.
The flowers of Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema) lure and trap adult fungus gnats with their fungus smell and accomplish pollination by these means.
Fungus gnats are primarily forest dwellers but can be found in a variety of ecosystems, often in association with fungal habitats, although most of their natural history secrets remain untold. They occur on all continents except Antarctica.
Arachnocampa is a family of flies. They are also called Fungus gnats. They occur in Australia and New Zealand. Their larvae are glowworms . They were called Bolitphila ( mushroom -lovers) until 1924. Then people found out that their larvae use silk threads to catch prey. Their current name means spider -grub .
Fungus gnats (Bradysia spp.) are major insect pests of greenhouse-grown horticultural crops mainly due to the direct feeding damage caused by the larvae, and the ability of larvae to transmit certain soil-borne plant pathogens.

Arachnocampa luminosa (Skuse, 1891), commonly known as New Zealand glowworm or simply glowworm, is a species of fungus gnat, and is solely endemic to New Zealand. The larval stage and the imago produce a blue-green bioluminescence. [2]
Adult gnats don’t live very long and often don’t travel far from where they were hatched. If they’re all in your kitchen, you have fruit flies. If they’re all in the bathroom or near the kitchen sink, you have drain fly. If they’re flying around your houseplant, they’re fungus gnats. 20. How long does a gnat live?

We've been dealing with obnoxious tiny little slow-flying gnats for a couple months now. At first I thought they were drain flies, but after pulling out my 40x lope and combining it with my phone camera, I'm 99% sure these are fungus gnats. They fit the physical description and movement behavior.
Lygistorrhininae, commonly called long-beaked fungus gnats is a subfamily of flies in the Diptera family Keroplatidae. The groups was long treated as a separate family, [ 1 ] but molecular phylogenetic analysis has shown it to belong to Keroplatidae. [ 2 ]
