The groups had different engines, trans, transfercases, ignition systems, etc. The rollbar change came about from a requirement to have 3-point seatbelts. The later group had wider axles. The only exception to that rule is the last series CJ5. They have narrow track axles and the 7's have wide track axles.

This was an issue for my 86 CJ7 last week. I replaced the module with a stock module from napa and bought the gold coil as well as a new coil connector (the little black horseshoe shaped plastic connector that connects to the top of the coil) this afternoon. Jeep is running like a champ again. all in all it cost me $63. good luck

The 84 still doesn't have relays and even with new sealed beams its still way dim. 1978 CJ7 304, NP435, Dana 300, D30 & M20 Spartan Locked, 2.5" BDS, 33" Yokohama Muds.
Flat towing requirements are transfer case specific. All can be towed up to 200 miles if prepared correctly. as per the 1984 Jeep CJ7/Scrambler owner's manual (a D300 transfer case): FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION. 1. turn ignition switch to OFF position to unlock steering wheel. 2. shift transmission into gear and transfer case into neutral.
Are there anythings that I should look for that might tell me that the engine, transmission or transfer case might be bad or about to go bad. Heck is there anything period that I should look for or ensure works. Brief Description of my find: 77 CJ7 with a hard top. All glass is intact. Frame is solid and appears straight.
All but one thing points to problem with fuel sending unit . 1. I verified good ground to dash and gage. I ran a separate ground wire to gage for duration of testing. 2. I verified power to the I terminal at the fuel gage. 3. My test light was steady lit at the I terminal on the back of the fuel gage. 4.
