Batley and Spen was a constituency in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament. The most recent MP was Kim Leadbeater, a Labour politician, who was elected in a 2021 by-election by a 323-vote margin. The seat had returned Labour MPs since the 1997 general election.
Kim Leadbeater was born on 1 May 1976 in Dewsbury, to parents Jean and Gordon Leadbeater. [2] She is the younger sister of former MP Jo Cox (1974–2016). Leadbeater attended Heckmondwike Grammar School, and says that she has lived in "every little bit of" the local area. [3]
Batley and Spen has been represented by a Labour MP since 1997. The incumbent MP for Batley and Spen, Jo Cox, was murdered on 16 June 2016. [42] A constituency by-election took place on 20 October 2016 and Tracy Brabin was elected. [ 43 ] A further by-election will be held in the constituency on 1 July 2021, after Brabin's resignation, following her election as Mayor of West Yorkshire .
Peacock served as a North Yorkshire County Councillor from 1981 to 1984, and represented Batley and Spen from 1983 to 1997, during which time she was the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Nicholas Scott as Minister for Social Security and Disabled People Unit (1992).
