During the 2020–2021 school year, the Prince George County School Board had a meeting where they voted to close the William A. Walton Elementary School and build a replacement school due to mold inside the school. The new school will be called Middle Road Elementary School. The school opened during the 2022–2023 school year.

In September 2010, PGCPS officially held a ground-breaking ceremony for a new Greenbelt Middle School. The new school will be the third LEED-certified "green building" in Prince George's County, and have a capacity of 990 students. Greenbelt Middle School was scheduled to open in the fall of 2012.

Central High School was Founded in 1961. The school building will be closed for the 2019–2020 school year for a $20 million HVAC repair project. Students will be relocated to the former Forestville High School building. [9]
