Turtle farms primarily raise freshwater turtles (primarily, Chinese softshell turtles as a food source [1] and sliders and cooter turtles for the pet trade); [3] [4] therefore, turtle farming is usually classified as aquaculture. However, some terrestrial tortoises (e.g. Cuora mouhotii) are also raised on farms for the pet trade. [1]
Indoors, three-toed box turtles should be kept in a large wooden enclosure measuring 6’L x 3’W x 2’H, or otherwise offering roughly 18 square feet of space. An indoor enclosure should have a high temperature side with a heat bulb at around 85 °F and a lower temperature side at 70–75 °F. Humidity should average between 60–80%.
Tortoises are generally considered to be strict herbivores, feeding on grasses, weeds, leafy greens, flowers, and some fruits. However, hunting and eating of birds has been observed on occasion. [29] Pet tortoises typically require diets based on wild grasses, weeds, leafy greens and certain flowers.
Certain foods may prove toxic despite the tortoises enjoyment of them, including legumes, tomatoes and cabbage. The animals eat small amounts of fruits as supplementary nutrition, however this should only be given occasionally.
