The early ministers of the church came from Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville. In 1866 a new church was built in the center of the town and served for about 25 years. In 1890 the parish built a Gothic Revival building, which was the largest church in Wright County at the time. [4] The building features ornate statues and German woodcarvings. [5]
The convent stands west of the church; it is a 3 + 1 ⁄ 2-story red-brick structure also designed by Murphy and built in 1929. Behind the convent stands the school building, which faces Gordon Avenue. It is a two-story red-brick building. [3] The first church building built for St Michael's parish was completed in 1868.
The parish was organized in December 1899 and soon after an old Roman Catholic church on Crescent Avenue was purchased. What was once known as St. Mary's became the new St. Michael's. In 1890, Bishop Tierney transferred Father Sulkowski and assigned Rev. Witold Becker as pastor.
The community soon outgrew the frame church, and a new brick church was built in 1890. It was dedicated by Richard Scannell, Bishop of Omaha on June 9, 1891. In September 2020, Pope Francis congratulated the congregation on it upcoming centennial anniversary, and encouraged its members to continue to spread devotion to St. Michael. [5] In September 2021, the Congregation celebrated its 100-year jubilee with a Mass of Thanksgiving at celebrated at St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica (London, Ontario). [9]
