The Sri Lankan Rupee (Sinhala: රුපියල්, Tamil: ரூபாய்; symbol: රු (plural) in English, රු in Sinhala, ௹ in Tamil; ISO code: LKR) is the currency of Sri Lanka. It is subdivided into 100 cents ( Sinhala : සත , Tamil : சதம் ), but cents are rarely seen in circulation due to their low value.
The Board of Commissioners of Currency of Ceylon was the currency board of the British colony of Ceylon which functioned from 1884 to 1950, when its functions were transferred to the Monitory Board of the Central Bank of Ceylon. It was established under the Paper Currency Ordinance of 1884 following the 1884 Ceylonese banking and monetary crisis.
On 20 May 1973, the UAE Currency Board introduced notes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 dirhams; a Dhs 1,000 note was issued on 3 January 1976. [4] A second series of note was introduced in 1982 which omitted the Dh 1 and Dhs 1,000 notes. Dhs 500 notes were introduced in 1983, followed by Dhs 200 in 1989.
