A pair of scissors with orange plastic handles, the best-known product by Fiskars. Fiskars Corporation was formed in 1649, when a Dutch merchant named Peter Thorwöste was given a charter by Christina, Queen of Sweden to establish a blast furnace and forging operation in the small village of Fiskars; however, he was not permitted to produce cannons. Gerber Legendary Blades is an American maker of knives, multitools, and other tools for outdoors and military headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Gerber is owned by the Finnish outdoors products company Fiskars. Gerber was established in 1939 by Pete Gerber. Gerber is the "largest maker of knives and multi-tools for the United States armed forces."
Dressmaker's shears have a long blade, typically 7–10 in (18–25 cm), for cutting out fabric. Blades are tapered, with one pointed and one rounded tip; the blunt tip prevents fabric from snagging on seams and threads. Blades have a "knife edge": the top blade is set at an acute angle which allows the scissors to cut through fabric easily.
Bypass pruners usually work exactly like a pair of scissors, with two blades "passing by" each other to make the cut. At least one of the blades will be curved: a convex upper blade with either a concave or straight lower one. Some bypass designs have only one blade, the lower jaw being broad (like an anvil) but passing the upper jaw.
The blade is made of non-rustproof carbon steel, blue-plastered by hand and finely forged from the base to the tip of the knife. The 90 mm (3.5 in) long blade shows patina (dark spots) caused by decades of use. It can easily be sharpened to a shaving sharp edge. Carbon steel is a popular choice for rough-use knives and cheaper options.
Pinking shears are scissors with saw-toothed blades instead of straight blades. They produce a zigzag pattern instead of a straight edge. Before pinking scissors were invented, a pinking punch or pinking iron was used to punch out a decorative hem on a garment.
